R.E.M. Cartography
Seven hand-built playlists mapping the band’s terrain: punkish sparks, Southern weather, hinterland strangeness, the central grammar, and the private rooms.
There are bands you listen to, and bands you map. R.E.M. is a geography: each album a region, each song a weather pattern. Over fifteen studio albums and thirty-one years, they built something that resists the standard playlist approach. You can’t just rank the hits. The interesting routes run through the hinterlands, the punkish edges, the late-night Southern roads, and the strange rooms where the atmosphere bends.
These eight playlists are hand-built paths through that terrain. They aren’t “Best Of” lists. They’re listening routes—each one a way into a different version of the band. Start anywhere. The tabs below let you open tracks in your preferred streaming service.
